Danny earned his place among the shantymen not by age or strength, but by daring. The youngest watchman in memory, he once scared off a band of midnight smugglers by howling like a ghost dog from the bell tower - wrapped in fishing net and painted with ash.
With his wild beard and ever-vigilant eyes, he’s the one who teaches kids how to fake sea curses and carve whistles from driftwood. His hooded cloak is always damp, and he’s known to show up unannounced during storms, just to check the ropes are tight and the lanterns lit.
They say Danny never quite grew up - he just learned how to climb higher and bark louder. The harbour trusts him more than it does most men.
