Old Joe

Old Joe had been a fixture in the town for as long as anyone could remember. No one was quite sure how old he was - his face, lined and rough, suggested decades of stories, yet his sharp wit made him seem ageless. He had the kind of presence that made people stop and listen, even when he wasn’t saying much.

He spent most of his days sitting outside the local café, cigarette dangling from his lips, nodding at passersby with a knowing smirk. He never hurried, never worried. People would come and go, pouring out their troubles over a cup of coffee, and Joe would offer a half-smile, a grunt, or, if he was feeling generous, a bit of dry wisdom: “Life’s just a big wave, mate. Either you ride it or let it swallow you.”

Rumour had it he had once been a sailor, or maybe a boxer. Some said he had been married once but lost her long ago. He never confirmed or denied anything, just let the stories swirl around him like the smoke from his ever-present cigarette.

Then, one day, Old Joe was gone. No big announcement, no goodbyes - just an empty chair where he used to sit. No one knew where he went, but somehow, it didn’t feel like an ending, just another one of his quiet disappearances.

Not long after, someone made a sculpture of him - his lopsided grin, his wild hair, the cigarette still hanging from his lips. It sat in the café’s window, a silent reminder of the man who never rushed, never worried, and never quite belonged to anyone but himself.
